What is a Chimney Liner?

A chimney liner is the noncombustible channel that all smoke and gases pass through as they are existing your heating appliances. Inadequately lined or unlined chimneys allow gasses and heat to pass into walls and living spaces which can cause extensive property damage, carbon monoxide poisoning and fires. A-1 Affordable offers stainless steel liners because they are the safest and most durable and can be used for either wood-burning fireplaces, gas-burning fireplaces, gas-burning furnaces or oil-burning furnaces. When installed properly and inspected annually, the chimney liner performs many functions.

Purpose of a chimney liner:

  • Ventilates Dangerous & Combustible Gases From Heating Appliances
  • Protects Your Property From Heat & Fire Damage
  • Protects The Outer Structure Of The Chimney
  • Helps your heating appliances to run more efficiently
  • Protects Natural Gas Appliances From Excess Moisture
  • Discourages Creosote Buildup In Fireplaces & Wood Burning Stoves
  • Meets National Fire Safety Codes

Chimney liners are mandated by most fire codes, namely the National Fire Prevention Agency. According to the NFPA 211:14.9, in regards to damaged or deteriorated liners:

If the flue liner in a chimney has softened, cracked or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion (i.e. heat, moisture, creosote and flue gases), the liner shall either be removed and replaced, repaired, or relined with a UL listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate to the class of chimney service.

Signs Your Chimney Needs to Be Relined:

Aside from the obvious signs of drafts, smoke, unpleasant smells, visible outer structure deterioration, heating appliances not working properly or heating appliances being changed, the following are signs that your chimney is in need of repair:

  • Your home or building is older and doesn’t currently have a liner. If your residential or commercial property is on the older side, it’s likely it doesn’t have a liner at all. Chimney lining can resolve many hazardous issues, while also prolonging the life of your chimney significantly.
  • You have condensation in your chimney. Moisture of any kind in your chimney leads to premature deterioration, which can spell big problems. A new liner will play an instrumental role in insulating your chimney to keep moisture out.
  • You’re converting from oil to gas. If you’re converting your current heating system from oil to gas, it’s critical to install a new liner that is optimal for your chimney’s new burning method.
  • Your gas appliance is venting into a masonry chimney. Code regulations require that all gas appliances be vented into a U.L. listed stainless steel liner.
